Learn how to make transparent soap at the Soapmaking Studio in San Diego County, CA.
Truly transparent soap requires strong ethanol (90%), or high-proof alcohol (180 proof), which is illegal in California. The Business and Professions Code section 23403 of California legislature makes the sale of alcohol stronger than 60% (or 120 proof) illegal. This class uses the weaker 60% alcohol because it is easily accessible. As a result, the soap made in class is very translucent, but not transparent. No alcohol remains in the finished bar of soap, which has a far superior rinsability when compared to traditional, opaque, cold process soap.
